Samsung’s 2nm GAA Process: New Insights and Market Impact

Samsung’s recent third-quarter report unveils fresh insights into its technological advancements. With its emerging 2nm GAA process, the company achieved a 5% boost in performance, 8% enhancement in power efficiency, and 5% area optimization when juxtaposed with their earlier 3nm GAA generation. This falls short of the company’s earlier projections, which aimed for a 12% performance increase, a 25% efficiency boost, and equivalent area gains.

As it stands, the foundry market is largely led by TSMC from Taiwan, which boasted a staggering 70.2% global market share based on its second-quarter sales. In contrast, Samsung lingers with a 7.3% share. TSMC’s dominance is bolstered by the burgeoning demand sparked by advancements in artificial intelligence coupled with consistent efficiency yields.

The tide might visibly turn with the arrival of the 2nm process. Notably, both Samsung and TSMC are transitioning to the GAA process with their 2nm initiatives. This is TSMC’s first foray into such technology, while Samsung brings its refined experience from its initial GAA integration during the 3nm iteration. GAA technology brings a revolutionary edge, minimizing current leakages and offering substantial improvements in both performance and energy consumption over the traditional FinFETs.

There has been a notable enhancement in production efficiency, previously estimated at 30%, now reaching the 50-60% bracket. This advancement positions Samsung favorably to scale their chip manufacturing efforts. In a strategic move, Samsung has acquired significant orders for its 2nm GAA process from leading cryptocurrency mining equipment producers, MicroBT and Canaan. These orders represent a 10% utilization of Samsung’s total production capacity. Additionally, the company recently secured a lucrative $16.5 billion contract with Tesla for its 2nm production capabilities.
