Google has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that enables Pixel 10 series phones to exchange files with iPhones using the AirDrop functionality via Android Quick Share. This innovation significantly simplifies the process of sharing photos and files between these two platforms. Initially exclusive to the Pixel 10 series, Google has plans to expand this capability to other devices in the future.
According to the company’s announcement, Quick Share and AirDrop now possess the ability to operate in unison. Details regarding the privacy and security aspects of this feature have been shared by the company on its technical blog. In practice, this feature is quite similar to the existing Quick Share process.
For the seamless transfer of files, the AirDrop visibility of the receiving Apple device needs to be adjusted to “Everyone for 10 minutes”. This setting allows users not listed in contacts to initiate file transfers. When the condition is met, the Pixel 10 will detect the Apple device as a standard Quick Share target present in the sharing menu.
Additionally, Google indicates that Android devices can receive files from Apple devices using AirDrop. To achieve this, the Quick Share visibility on the Android device should also be set to “Everyone for 10 minutes” or the “receive” mode must be activated on the Quick Share page.
Currently, it’s unclear if Apple was involved in this feature’s development. Apple has yet to officially comment on the matter. Should Apple have no role in this innovation, questions arise regarding whether Google’s approach might be seen as a potential security risk, prompting Apple to counteract it through a software update.
