The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) has revealed plans to dispatch an unmanned spacecraft to replace a damaged capsule for its Tiangong crew. As investigators determine the timeline, current indications suggest that a new Shenzhou capsule is slated for launch on November 25.

Critical Wait in Space

The Shenzhou-20 capsule, initially designated for bringing the former crew back to Earth, encountered safety issues when a crack emerged in its observation window due to a collision with space debris. Originally scheduled to return on November 5, the mission was delayed for safety precautions.

Further analysis classified the Shenzhou-20 as unsuitable for emergency situations for the current crew of Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang, leaving them onboard without a safe escape vehicle. Plans are now set for an unmanned launch of the Shenzhou-22 capsule, expected to dock with Tiangong. If all goes well, the crew will make their return journey upon completing their mission.

Despite no immediate danger to station supplies and life systems, potential emergencies like fire or pressure loss remain a concern given the absence of an escape capsule. This situation presents unprecedented risks for China’s space endeavors.

Second ‘Stranded’ Case

This predicament marks the second high-profile instance of astronauts being stranded in the last two years. Previously, NASA astronauts endured an extended mission aboard a malfunctioning Boeing Starliner vehicle. Technical issues prompted their eventual return via SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, underscoring the necessity for global rescue protocols.

Experts highlight that these incidents illustrate the urgency for developing standardized procedures and emergency systems amid increasing space missions. Given the fragile nature of space travel, devising efficient rescue operations is paramount.

Space Junk Alert

Space debris continues to challenge and threaten ongoing operations. Old mission remnants and fragmented satellite parts enlarge the risk to modern spacecraft and stations, as evidenced by previous space station evasive maneuvers to avoid catastrophic collisions.

Ensuring a trouble-free journey for the Shenzhou-22 capsule is critical for the Tiangong crew’s safety. These incidents serve as crucial reminders of the precariousness of human space ventures, emphasizing the need for caution and advanced preparation.
