The recent mission by NASA has culminated in the detailed revelation of the third interstellar visitor to our solar system—3I/ATLAS. This remarkable comet, which made a swift flyby near Mars in October, was diligently monitored by the MAVEN satellite, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), and the Perseverance rover. This collaborative enterprise has bestowed researchers with unparalleled insights into the chemistry of an extraterrestrial body originating beyond our solar system’s bounds.

Observing from the unique vantage point of space, these mission data offer perspectives unattainable from terrestrial telescopes. With its estimated diameter spanning between 440 meters and 5.6 kilometers, the comet represents a significant opportunity for scientific inquiry.

Critical Observations from Mars Orbit: The orbital instruments around Mars zeroed in on the comet for valuable close-up observations. The HiRISE camera on the MRO succeeded in capturing images of the fast-moving object, travelling approximately 31 million kilometers from its surface. These images, depicting a luminous, pixelated form composed of ice and dust, are presently under thorough examination to ascertain the nucleus’s dimensions, alongside the characteristics of the coma’s particles.

Moreover, MAVEN’s ultraviolet spectrograph, capable of multi-wavelength analysis, has produced detailed images of the hydrogen emanating from the comet. This data is vital, as it sheds light on the comet’s composition and allows scientists to estimate the rate at which its water vaporizes. Analyzing MAVEN’s observations also opens a window to deduce the comet’s deuterium/hydrogen ratio—a key factor in understanding its formation and trajectory before it was flung into interstellar space.

Even from the Martian surface, the Perseverance rover contributed by capturing the comet’s movement through the sky on October 4. Employing a long exposure technique, the rover recorded a faint yet distinct streaking motion. The resulting image, wherein stars appear as elongated lines, pinpoints the comet as a subtle, concentrated streak against the backdrop of space.

Astronomical efforts from all around the globe continue to piece together the comet’s journey as it veers towards the solar system’s interior. Currently, 3I/ATLAS is located over 305 million kilometers away from Earth and is predicted to come as close as 268.7 million kilometers by mid-December before its anticipated departure back into the vast interstellar space. Notably, 3I/ATLAS is not expected to reenter our solar system.
